Peace Pipes

As if I needed another reason to play around on the lathe - someone stopped by my shop and asked if I'd consider making a Peace Pipe. The hardest part was drilling the draft hole down the stem,

but a doweling jig (to help center the bit) made it a bit easier.

It's been years since I made a pipe, but lathe work is so enjoyable, I churned out four of them.

A round bottomed tobacco chamber is what I wanted to bore, but the only way to achieve it was to put a custom grind on a spade bit.

 Perfect!

A few bowls, awaiting their stems.

My client chose the pecan pipe - and requested that I carve her astrological symbol into it - in this case - Cancer, the Crab.
