Air Force Thunderbirds Helmet Case
Living in a town with an Air Force Base brings many design projects to my studio.
Commissioned by the pilot's family to commemorate his years as an Air Force Thunderbird pilot. This African mahogany display case features the a 360˚display of his helmet and its air hose dock.
The Thunderbirds perform around the world, displaying the pride, precision, and professionalism of the United States, Air Force. Through airshows and flyovers, they excite and inspire. This was the inspiration when designing this case.
The drawer underneath stores metals, coins, and military patches amassed throughout the pilot's career, and the framed glass top is hinged for easy helmet removal. The intricate details on this helmet and designs painted on this helmet are easily viewed, as is the headrest pad hung behind the helmet.
The family who commissioned this for their retiring son requested hardware that would reflect the military aspect of his work.
The back knob and the drawer pull are both gears that come from military machinery.
